Hunting and Gatherings...a Rowing Craft...and a vest from JL Powell

From American Traders

"The Skylark is the the perfect small rowing craft.Comfortably sized to fit up to three adults, this beautiful boat has a unique triple-keel design that helps it track superbly. The Skylark comes with two sets of brass oar sockets, one pair spruce spoon blade oars and a set of pinned oar locks (leathers are an option); cherry trim, seats, and wide, fan-shaped stern backrest that looks and feels fantastic. As versatile as it is beautiful, the Skylark is a hit with sportsmen as well as the recreational rower.

And if you prefer not to row, the Skylark’s square stern allows for a max 4HP gas motor (or any size electric trolling motor) to be mounted."

One of my favorite vests is a JL Powell made of lamb skin leather and British Millerain waxed cotton - I have been using a lot of clothing from JLP during my travels on the African continent as well as in the Middle East, Europe, the Caribbean/West Indies an the Americas. Good quality and JLP does not mass produce...

"A Horse is Poetry in Motion"

"Where in this wide world can man find nobility without pride,
Friendship without envy,
Or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is served with muscle
And strength by gentleness confined
He serves without servility; he has fought without enmity.
There is nothing so powerful, nothing less violent.
There is nothing so quick, nothing more patient.
All our history is in his industry.
We are his heirs, he our inheritance."

A nice body of smoke.
A refined and delicious little cigar.

Quiet Desperation...

An old book had a message... from the book i was ready to read this evening ...

out fell an old newspaper clip ... like a tree shed its leaves ... now it rested peacefully on my faded Westley Richards.

I picked it up and read...

Family Archives...

(All photos from the family archives)
I was born into a rather eccentric family. You do not choose your family. Depending upon how we are brought up, we are either deeply aware of the particular reading of reality into which we are born, or we are peripherally aware of it.

Ancestors stretch behind a man and his nature like a fan and these men and women possessed plenty of character of one sort or another.  We turn around to see their faces fading into history.

"Traditions are the guideposts driven deep in our subconscious minds.  The most powerful ones are those we cannot even describe, aren't even aware of."

"I had become, with the approach of night, once more aware of loneliness and time - those companions whithout whom no journey can yield us anything."
- Lawrence Durrell
